An intro to OKRs: the compass for your business goals

Ever felt lost among so many tasks and goals in your business? At DISSAU, in our time building companies and supporting their growth, we've seen a frustrating stage many entrepreneurs go through: more tasks than time on the calendar. And no matter how hard they work, the tasks pile up —and completing them doesn't always translate into revenue.

Today we share a map for your business, one that guides you and lets you measure your progress over time: OKRs (Objectives and Key Results).

What are OKRs?

They're a simple but powerful tool that combines two elements:

Objective (O)

What you want to achieve: the destination on the map. It inspires and gives clarity. Example: increase the company's leads by 30%.

Key Results (KR)

The road signs that show whether you're moving toward the objective. Measurable and specific. Each KR is a concrete step toward the objective.

For that "more leads" objective, the Key Results could be:

  • Publish a blog post every week and capture 5% to 10% of leads via subscriptions.
  • Create a value offer on a landing page that adds 10% more leads.
  • Launch an engagement contest that raises capture by 15%.

OKRs: clear objectives and measurable key results.

Why they work

  • Focus: they center your attention on what matters most.
  • Measurement: you know how far you've come, and the whole team knows the goal and how success is measured.
  • Adaptability: they allow quick adjustments if circumstances change.

A real case

One of our clients runs a small landscaping business (gardening and maintenance) in their community. They were constantly chasing new customers every month just to replace the ones who left. Their real goal was different: stop running and grow with customers who stay and refer. They implemented this OKR:

Notice the difference: the objective inspires, but each Key Result is a number you can watch go up or down every month. Six months later, this client not only improved satisfaction: they won new contracts through recommendations and stabilized their revenue. And to see it all on one dashboard, for many of our clients we set up a CRM/ERP that automates and organizes the business's processes, so measuring each Key Result stops being a headache.
